About Me

Hi everyone!

My name is Stephanie Sandino, I grew up down the road past Mt. Sac in a little-big town called Walnut however, I relocated to Lake Elsinore almost a year ago. Growing up I went to a private 1-8 school in Valinda, CA called St. Martha Catholic School. I was later a Mustang (yes, another horse!) at Walnut High School from 2003-2007 where I enjoyed 4 awesome years! During my senior year of high school I was recruited to play soccer for the women's team here at Cal Poly Pomona where I earned my BS in Kinesiology. I also got my Single Subject Teaching Credential for PE there and will resume studying there this Fall for a Masters in Kinesiology. When my 4 years of eligibility were up I spent some time helping the head coach as a student assistant coach; I had the opportunity to implement a strength program for the women's soccer team as well as aid in the process of recruiting. Despite my active involvement in the sport with coaching, I knew I wasn't done playing so I went to Colorado to play semi-professional soccer in the W-League. On this team I had the chance to travel to Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria, and even back to LA! It was a once in a lifetime experience that will forever stay with me and help me instill dreams in other students.

Well, in regards to where I am on the technology continuum I don't think I would consider myself a "techy" but I have had multiple experiences with social networks such as MySpace, Facebook, Tumblr and Pintrest. I have also been exposed to many teaching websites such as TeacherWeb, Weebly and Gooru. I am very open to the whole computer thing, in fact, I actually want to integrate it into P.E. as part of my curriculum. I want to start doing skill analysis via iPads, homework assignments via Choose My Plate, and a blog to form discussion as part of participation points. As of right now I simply have a Weebly that gives students and parents the opportunity to learn about me, view the P.E. handbook, learn about the FitnessGram, as well as a blog that will update the parents on what the students are doing on a day-to-day basis, resources, and ways to become a healthier "you." I'm a little frightened and intimidated with the HTML code introduction, but at the same time I'm excited to learn new information that will only help me as a teacher as well as my students!

This will be my first quarter working on my Masters, I am under the Kinesiology- Curriculum and Instruction plan.I just finished the credential program here at Cal Poly where they offered a rather smooth transition into the Masters program, hence, I seized the opportunity! I'm still young and it is my very first year teaching so I thought to myself I might as well take advantage of this- and that is exactly what I did. I don't want to be just another "roll out the ball" kind of teacher and I think that my participation in the Masters program will be extremely beneficial to my growth. Some of my personal goals as mentioned before is to integrate technology into the Physical Education world. Nowadays our students are on the tech wave and in order to feed their interests I want to incorporate it to maximize learning in my class. I want to go above and beyond the old school way of running laps, calisthenics, etc. My classes comprise of innovative activities, outdoor adventure, and fitness activities that will help them adopt their own fitness style. In this program I want to learn more about developing a curriculum that suits the state standards, students interests, and my philosophy. Also, learning about teacher effectiveness, assessment, and technology will aid me in becoming a more well rounded teacher!

I'm very excited to start the program and spend some quality geek time with all of you!

  1. Hi Stephanie!
I'm so impressed with your soccer experience. Not very many people can say they've played professional, or semi-professional soccer! I also love that you are excited about integrating technology in a p.e. program. People don't usually think of the two going together. You have a lot of good ideas. I too am unsure of the HTML part, but we can all help each other, and Dr. McGarvey is VERY patient!
    See you soon.

  2. I went to Rowland High School, class of 2004 and played on the varsity soccer team, so we were league rivals for a year. That is awesome you had the opportunity and experience to play semi-professional soccer, and travel to new places. That is great you want to integrate technology with PE. It is unfortunate people think of PE where you make the kids run the mile or have free play instead of a class were you're promoting physical health for life. I can't wait to spend some geek time too. Like I told my friends by the end of this program I am going to be speaking like the guys from The Big Bang Theory.

  3. Hey Stephanie, it seems like you've had a lot of experience with athletics! I'm sure all of your coaching and traveling experience as a semi-professional athlete has provided you with a great set of skills that you can incorporate as a PE teacher, along with all of this technology! You'll do great!

  5. I remember you from previous classes & wanted to see how you were thinking of integrating technology into PE! You have some great ideas with the Choose My Plate and iPad skill testing. I didn't even think of all the possibilities when you bring ipad/iphone apps into the equation! I think you will be a great teacher & the kids will love your class, since, as you said..it will deviate from the average and predictable PE activities.
